Description

SPACE PATROL is a television show from 1950 about Buzz Corey, Cadet Happy, and the rest of the Space Patrol. It airs daily on New Ellijay Television.

Commander Buzz Corry and his young sidekick Cadet Happy patrolled the space lanes aboard the rocket cruiser Terra, facing down villains like Mr. Proteus and Prince Baccarratti with ray guns, paralyzers, and the famous Brainograph . The show began as a local 15-minute Los Angeles program in 1950, but by December of that year ABC added it to their Saturday schedule and an overnight sensation was born .

Space Patrol made history on multiple fronts. It was the first regular live West Coast morning program beamed to the East Coast, requiring an intricate network of cable and relay stations that we take for granted today . In 1953, an episode became the subject of the first experimental 3D television broadcast, with viewers encouraged to buy Ralston cereal for special glasses . The show ran five and a half seasons, producing over 200 half-hour episodes and nearly 900 fifteen-minute shows .

What set Space Patrol apart was its embrace of young viewers. Kids could join the Space Patrol club, buy cosmic smoke guns, and feel like they were part of the action when the “premium of the month” was written directly into the story . Ralston Purina sponsored the adventures, and the merchandising phenomenon that followed made Space Patrol one of the nation’s first mass media sensations .
